This photo and drawing depict a Southern Railway ventilated box car. These cars were designed to carry fresh fruit and produce that did not need icing to the market. Watermelons were a crop commonly transported in such cars. Out of season they might carry anything. According to the 1953 ORER, the Southern had 20 cars of this class in service. Ventilated boxc cars were also used extensively on the SAL, ACL, and other southeastern railroads. |
